[OSF] Peanut Butter and Bananas - Delicious Sandwich...Atheist's Nightmare Foods?

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm all for being open minded to religion, and actively exploring my personal spirituality. But man, some arguments (both for and against the concepts) are just ... oh, what's the word I want here ... well, nuts. Here's two old school (in Internet lifetimes) examples from the "for" category. Bananas: with Kirk Cameron Peanut Butter: with Chuck Missler (who?) Kirk Cameron "Debunked" (interesting):

[OSF] Kick-Ass Weng Weng Rap

Who's Weng Weng (pronounced Wang Wang), you ask? He's the baddest 2'9" B-movie star you never heard of...until now. According to Boing Boing referencing trashvideo he began his movie career doing underground adult films...nice. Also, he was in a video ["MoonBoy From Another Planet" in which he played a lovable three foot alien who befriends a poor Filipino boy] whos filmmaker sued Steven Spielberg for ripping off "E.T.". Also, he's a Guiness World Record holder (shortest adult actor in a leading role). The best part is, the rap is actually really good. Great lyrics. Classic: Put your hands low down where he can see 'em Then put 'em up high He's a tiny human being Guaranteein security to Philipino citizens, It's all the same thing to Weng Weng Guilty, innocent He got his own style, he's got a cute little smile In fact one time he even got picked up by a pedophile But kill that He's skilled at the art of attack He got a razorblade hat, a little gat, and a rocketpack He doesn't like booze so never pour him a shot of scotch Just give him a coke and you won't get a pop in the crotch His movies you love to watch, he knows that they all sweet WENG WENG IS DOIN HIS THANG THANG UNDER THREE FEET You want fight scenes? SURE! [Wikipedia]

More 300 Trailer Re-Cuts

So, a week or two or three ago (shut up, measuring time is stupid) I posted the 300 Anchorman clip. Little did I know just how many 300 trailer re-cuts there were. I still think the Anchorman one is the best - but I'll admit I haven't watched 1/5 of the ones out there. Here's two I did watch, because these movies are both awesome: Army of Darkness The Sandlot If you've got some time on your hands, check out the rest at [Arrogantics]

UFOPORNO! Yes...Alien Porn. Kinda.

Apparently, this is from a Finnish sketch comedy show named "Ranuan Kummit". Possibly NSFW, assuming you're not allowed to watch clothed dancing alien softcore porn while a narrator hollers in Finnish.

Saltwater into fire...and a cure for cancer?

So this guy from Erie came up with this idea at like 3 in the morning for curing cancer using radio waves. Genius by itself...but, when you add the fact that a by-product of this invention is that he can also set salt water on fire (thus making it combustible enough to be a fuel source)...well, I'll let the video blow your mind for me. It's too early to be witty.

Microsoft Surface

Now this is what I'm talking about. In 5 years we're all going to have these in our homes and it will make life so much simpler. Can you imagine your coffee table acting as a media server, picture and movie viewer, web browser and bluetooth/usb port all in one? That and a slick ass touch interface to interact with all your information.

Beware of trick beer glasses

No, I'm not talking about beer goggles. I'm talking about the skinny glasses some bars use for serving beer. Chill your beer FAST with science

This was actually on an episode of MythBusters, me and the Grand Chawhee (50 points if you know what that's from) tried it and like most science, it worked really really well. I'd explain how it works but then you wouldn't watch the video, and then what's the point of me posting it in the first place? So watch, you zoomer, and learn. GOOOO SCIENCE!

Easy Ways to Unlock your Car

So, it's been 6 days since the last post, and I refuse to let it get to a week, because that's the start of a downward spiral I don't want to get on. Unlike the Super Fun Happy Slide, which I would LOVE to get on. Lock yourself out of your car? Can't find it in a parking lot? Here's a few ideas that may or may not work for you. Just a head up. If you see this dude, beware. You won't be able to understand him, but know that where you are is HIS corner, not yours. Also, don't drive a PT Cruiser near his corner. He apparently doesn't take kindly to that particular model. NSFW language.

Funny Cat Video

Alright, I'd like to say I'm posting this because there are girls that read this crazy blog, but the truth is, I find the strangest shit funny. And as someone who truly enjoys watching Kimbo bare-knuckle street fight (if you don't know what I'm talking about, wait for next OSF) you'd probably never expect that I'd really like a video about cats. Just cats. Well, I do, so shut up. What do you know anyway? This shit is hilarious. It takes a lot to make me laugh at the computer when I'm alone, especially more than once. Good job, random cat video.

[OSF] Tecmo Bowl making a comeback

The makers of the classic NES football game Tecmo Bowl and the superior Tecmo Super Bowl are in the process of making an updated version of the game for today's consoles. As long as you can still do this, I'm all in... Here's MJD's take on it from The Debriefing... Picture a night of Tecmo Bowl with your friends right now. You'd put the game in, and for about 30 seconds, you'd be a giddy young buck. Within a couple of minutes, though, you'll say to yourself, "Really, this is it? I run in zig-zags and have just two different buttons to press?" Then one guy will leave because he has to go clean out his gutters or his wife will leave him, and another guy will pass out behind the couch because this is the one night of the month he's allowed to drink and he overdid it. From there, another friend will ask if he can turn the game off and watch Grey's Anatomy, and the one guy who does want to play, the unemployed stoner who has played Tecmo Bowl for three hours every day since 1988, will call you a sissy because you're saying this whole thing was a bad idea. Let's hope the new game has more then 4 plays to pick from and maybe a hair better graphics. As of this post there's no real information on specifics of the game.

[OSF] I wanna know where da GOL' at! (Leprechaun, leprechaun)

So, these people in Mobile, Alabama think they've seen a leprechaun in their neighborhood. Some huge black guy has an Irish great-great grandfather that gave him a special leprechaun flute. Or, it "Could be a crackhead, got hol' ta tha wrong stuff. And it told him to climb up in a tree and act like a leprechaun." My favorite part, "who all seen the leprechaun say yeaaaaay" - the look he gives the camera after that is priceless. Yes, there's a rap remix. CLASSIC. Kick it, Mr. T! The same song above, but with a hilarious video starring little people dressed as leprechauns Another rap remix. I like the other one better. BUBB RUBB makes a comeback, remixed into the leprechaun video This one is so big, it's got a Wikipedia entry. And a nice little aside... he WPMI-TV news story featured an amateur sketch of the creature. Upon realizing the sudden fame of their story, the staff of WPMI-TV conducted an auction for the sketch on eBay, which garnered $1100 [Wikipedia]

[OSF] The price is wrong, Bitch!

This isn't totally old school for old school friday, but the clip at the beginning is. This is definitely up there with movie moments I could have never predicted. Sweet old Bob Barker kicking the shit out of Adam Sandler. I haven't watched The Price is Right for a while now, with having to work for the man and all. Nevertheless it's still odd to think about daytime TV without Bob Barker.

How can parts of Canada be "missing" gravity?

For more than 40 years, scientists have tried to figure out what's causing large parts of Canada, particularly the Hudson Bay region, to be "missing" gravity. In other words, gravity in the Hudson Bay area and surrounding regions is lower than it is in other parts of the world, a phenomenon first identified in the 1960s when the Earth's global gravity fields were being charted. Bruce Bowen's greatest hits

I think by now it's clear to anyone outside of San Antonio that Bruce Bowen is a dirty player. A great defender he might be and off the court he's apparently a very likable and intelligent guy. On the court though, he does stuff like this. That's just the most recent occurrence. There's plenty more where that came from but I'd highly recommend this one.

Police officer overdoses on marijuana

So a cop in Michigan confiscated some pot off a random person on the street, took it home and made brownies with it. He and his wife then ate the brownies and thought they were dying. To cover it up, the guy blamed the whole deal on his wife. Classy. Here's the 911 call they placed when they were on deaths doorstep. Just in case you were wondering, there has never been a documented case of marijuana killing anyone. Ever. The cop has since resigned.

Scientists find magnets that repel sharks

A company named Shark Defense have found that a rare earth magnet may be the key to avoid getting eaten by Jaws. Since 2001, SharkDefense has been working on a chemical shark repellent. According to Herrmann, he and Stroud were playing around with powerful rare-earth magnets in 2005, when he dropped one next to their shark research tank in Oak Ridge, New Jersey. The lemon and nurse sharks inside instantly darted to the opposite wall. In testing at the Bimini Biological Research Station shark lab in the Bahamas, Stroud and Herrmann have found that sharks dramatically avoid magnets made from neodymium, iron and boron. The magnets even rouse sharks from tonic immobility, a coma-like state induced by turning them upside down. As you can see in this video, the sharks won't cross the line of magnets on the tank floor. Xylitol can be harmful to dogs

So, anyone who's ever sent me an email forward that made no sense at all knows that I'm very big on debunking that kind of crap. Could Bill Gates POSSIBLY track and pay you for sending emails? WOULD he? Don't be ridiculous. Yet I still get that one sent to me, randomly, 8-10 years later [sigh]. If you're one of the guilty forwarders, I'm going to let you in on a dirty little secret: Snopes. Before you hit "Forward", go to Snopes.com, please, for the love of god. Save us all the time and bandwidth. However, some of them actually are true. This is one of them...a big one. As a pet lover, I'm amazed I haven't actually researched this before, but I'm glad I did now. Spread the word to anyone you know who has dogs...be VERY careful, especially with Orbitz and other gums (nothing against them, I love Orbitz, it just seems to be the most likely place a dog is going to get Xylitol from in most households). Xylitol is a sugar alcohol used in candy and chewing gum. It is also found in some pharmaceuticals and oral health products such as chewable vitamins and throat lozenges. It can also be used in home baking. While Xylitol is safe for humans, it can be harmful to dogs. The compound doesn't affect glucose levels in people, but when ingested by dogs it can cause a dangerous surge of insulin. (In as little as 15 minutes, the blood sugar of a dog that has eaten gum containing Xylitol may register a marked drop in blood sugar.) At higher doses, Xylitol is believed toxic to the canine liver. Just three grams of Xylitol can kill a 65-pound dog. [Snopes] [Wikipedia]

Video Games turn 40 today

May 15th marks the 40 year anniversary of the first games hooked up to the television. An article on the 1up site tells the story of Ralph Baer, Bill Harrison, and Bill Rusch working at the Sanders Associates company on a little game called Pong. They go into a great deal of detail on the development of the console, going so far as to include a number of the group's original notes on the project. [1up.com] via [Slashdot]

Rev. Jerry Fallwell Dead

I'll leave commentary to other bloggers. I've learned to try to keep my mouth generally shut when it comes to religion, especially the "Moral Majority" (what a stupid name). Nobody wants to hear what I have to say, and those who do already agree with me about stuff. LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell — founder of the Moral Majority and the face of the religious right in the 1980s — died Tuesday after being found unconscious in his office, a Liberty University executive said. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but noted that Falwell had “a history of heart challenges.” [MSNBC]

[OSF] Bubb Rubb says: The Whistles go WOOOOO

Alright, so last week Old School Friday [OSF] kind of...fell apart. Mostly because my computer decided to do the same. But, here at work, Scally and I are running 8-Track Tuesdays (yes, we have an 8 track player, and yes, about 100 8-tracks...the Stones are on right now). So, I'll make up for it now, while I'm in an old school mood. This week's classic: Bubb Rubb and Lil' Sis and their whistle tips. This one was passed around for a while, then fell off for a few years, and came back with a vengeance this year. So, here it is, along with multiple remix versions. Freaking classics. My favorite part of the video, besides the whole thing, is at the end when he completely blows the stop sign and almost crashes (and you can't even barely hear his whistler tips anyway). ORIGINAL: REMIX: TECHNO REMIX: LUDACRIS REMIX: Who could forget Kailey? AND! A Bubb Rubb documentary/interview thing Chillin' at the Mansion: This is a short trailer for Bubb Rubb's DVD. I was gonna skip this one, but I love Prefuse 73, so I'll include it...entertaining, but not as funny as the other ones.

Would you pay $50 to watch a new movie at home?

How much would you pay to see a new theatrical release in the comfort of your own home? Comcast is trying to make the "simultaneous release" dream happen, but with prices being proposed in the $30-50 range per screening, the dream looks more like a Hollywood acid trip. Comcast COO Stephen Burke told attendees at last week's national cable confab that studios are interested, but that interest must be limited, for he didn't name names and the studios aren't talking. It is the first time we've heard some quasi-solid pricing details from a major player, however. My first thought was that $50 is a ridiculous amount to pay for one movie. But on second thought if you think about the whole movie going experience, paying $10 per ticket to get in, dealing with all the kids and waiting in line for food (and no beer). I'd much rather have a few friends over and charging everyone about the same amount you'd pay to get into the movie. [Read]

Heroes Spinoff

Heroes is launching a new series to tide watchers over till the new season starts. The new show has been ordered for six episodes, and will introduce a completely new set of characters. The coolest part: In an effort to make the show interactive (and, I'm guessing, to squash what is going to be some griping by "Heroes" fans who are unhappy that the original show won't return in September), NBC will ask fans to vote on which is the new characters is their favorite, and that character will then become a regular cast member on the original series. Also in the article is information about a few of NBC's other shows including Scrubs, The Office and My Name Is Earl. [Read]

A new type of theatre experience

Mark Cuban and his Landmark Theatres are putting a fresh spin on going to the movies, making the experience a little more adult friendly. “In our new Denver theater, we completely removed the concession stands,” says Cuban. “The original design had the traditional concession stand taking up prime real estate and dominating the look and feel of the theater. We decided that we would rather use that space for amenities, retail sales (movies, books, indie cinema related items), and ‘interstitial’ type entertainment that complements our ‘datenight for grownups’ concept in a lounge-like environment. Basically it became a place where you could go on a date, have a drink, food and be entertained before and after seeing a movie." I especially like the idea of being able to get a drink before of after the movie. That and being able to go see a movie and not feel like you're back in 8th grade. [Read]

Joseph Smith Sphinx (Mormon)

So, a friend of mine went to SLC this weekend, and came back with stories of the Joseph Smith Sphinx. Yes, it's real... The finished statues are likewise unconventional, even eccentric: a sacrificial altar, a shrine to Child's beloved wife Bertha, even a sphinx with the face of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, Jr. Child, who shared the garden with thousands of visitors over his lifetime, knew that not everyone would appreciate his particular artistic vision. His primary concern, however, was that the garden would succed in making people think: "You don't have to agree with me," he said. "You may think I am a nut, but I hope I have aroused your thinking and curiosity." [Wiki] [PostMormon.org]

A new kind of 'power plant'?

From a distance, as we rounded a bend and first caught sight of it, I couldn't believe the strange structure ahead of me was actually real. The tower looked like it was being hosed with giant sprays of water or was somehow being squirted with jets of pale gas. I had trouble working it out.

In fact, as we found out when we got closer, the rays of sunlight reflected by a field of 600 huge mirrors are so intense they illuminate the water vapour and dust hanging in the air. It is Europe's first commercially operating power station using the Sun's energy this way and at the moment its operator, Solucar, proudly claims that it generates 11 Megawatts (MW) of electricity without emitting a single puff of greenhouse gas. This current figure is enough to power up to 6,000 homes.

11 year old girl kills 2 home invaders

Two illegal aliens broke into a house in Montana where an 11 year old girl was all alone. Usually this is the start of a tragic story, but not if that little girl is a clay shooting champion who just happens to know where her dad keeps his shotgun. "The more I continue to do things and my name is in the media, I'm not going to get anywhere. I'm taking it upon myself and giving everybody my word that things are going to get changed around. Things are going to get turned around. I have a game plan for it. The company I keep, a lot of things gotta change, and I mean that from the heart". Absinthe soon to be available stateside (legally)

Finally a way to legally purchase absinthe in the US. From the article... I sampled the 124-proof liqueur last week, while watching the National Basketball Association playoffs. I've only tried absinthe once, and it was a homemade concoction which tasted like burnt ass hair mixed with dog shit. I didn't really feel any effects from it although I only managed to get a shot or 2 down. Let's hope this stuff actually works since it's almost $60 for a 750ml bottle.
